Business, Legacy and Purpose
William Louey Lai Kuen is a Hong Kong businessman who has spent much of his life working at the intersection of business, education and long-term mentorship.
His family has been associated with Kowloon Motor Bus for generations, and he became a director of the company in 1997. Over the years, he has also been involved in property and sustainability-focused ventures. While business remains an important part of his life, education has shaped his sense of purpose more deeply.
As the fourth-generation heir of the prominent Louey family in Asia, William’s family legacy is deeply rooted in Hong Kong’s transportation history. His great-grandfather, William Sui Tak Louey, founded the Kowloon Motor Bus Company in 1921. This company is Hong Kong’s oldest transportation provider, which, although privately owned, offers public bus services to residents at affordable rates.
The Art of Giving Back
A Legacy of Personal Touch
Despite his diverse professional life, William Louey’s ultimate wish has always been to delve into the heart of his family’s values: the art of giving back to society. His approach to philanthropy was profoundly influenced by his late grandmother, an ardent, quiet giver whose full extent of charitable work he only discovered at her funeral. She was an inspiration to him, having spent significant time taking him to orphanages and institutions for disabled and elderly people since he was only seven years of age.

Education, Mentorship and a Legacy That Continues
In 1995, William Louey founded the William S.D. Louey Educational Foundation to give talented young people from disadvantaged backgrounds access to transformative educational opportunities. Since then, more than 60 students, primarily from mainland China, have received support to pursue education in the UK, with many progressing to Oxford and Cambridge. For William, the journey extends beyond financial assistance through personal mentorship and a belief in paying opportunities forward. Many former scholars have gone on to support others themselves, continuing a legacy of education, contribution and giving back.

Recognition and Responsibility
William Louey’s contribution to education has earned international recognition, including an invitation from the then Prince Charles to discuss opportunities for Chinese students in British education. In 2013, Oxford University awarded him the Elizabeth Wordsworth Fellowship for his contribution to higher education. Yet for William, recognition remains secondary to the personal relationships and lasting impact created through his work.
